Clinical case
A 24-year-old female patient with a history of SARS CoV-2 infection, clinically asymptomatic.
A follow-up CT scan revealed a left lung tumour with cystic features and probable pericardial involvement.
Surgical plan and outcome in the operating room
The surgical plan chosen was a left congenital pericardial cyst resection, which was performed by uniportal thoracoscopy. To complement the surgical planning, Dr. Martínez Arias had different 3D models that showed the different structures of interest.
In mini-invasive treatments, such as thoracoscopies, it is very important to have a thorough knowledge of the structures of the area to be treated, as the small working space demands it. In addition, a detailed preoperative knowledge of the area allows a shorter exploration time at the beginning of the intervention, which would result in a reduction of the total surgery time.
For this reason, Dr. Martínez Arias used different models in order to know the precise position of the tumour, the proximity of the pulmonary vasculature, the cardiovascular structures and the relationship to the bronchial tree.
For the surgery, the doctor in charge had the 3D digital models in the operating theatre, which served as a guide during the surgical approach. The surgery was performed successfully and the patient had no postoperative complications, which allowed her to be discharged the day after the operation.
"It gives a clearer idea of the three-dimensional aspect of the lesion to be resected. "They were a great help, a magnificent complement to surgical planning", says Dr Martínez Arias of the 3D reconstructions and his experience using them.
